St Johnstone   3 - 1   Falkirk

Collin Samuel scored an early goal for St Johnstone

St Johnstone put more distance between themselves and bottom club Falkirk with a convincing victory.

Collin Samuel latched on to a poor clearance from Brian McLean to shoot home from 10 yards after 90 seconds.

Carl Finnigan levelled after the break with an impressive volley, but Chris Millar restored Saints' lead with a drive across Robert Olejnik.

The Bairns keeper was at fault when he failed to gather a free kick and Murray Davidson headed in from close range.

The result leaves Falkirk four points adrift at the foot of the Scottish Premier League table and the Bairns contributed to their own downfall with some costly mistakes.

St Johnstone were gifted a very early lead when McLean misjudged the flight of Dave MacKay's cross as he attempted to chest it away and only succeeded in setting up Samuel.

Saints' top scorer was never going to miss from 10 yards out and he rippled the net for his sixth of the season.

Experienced full-back Jackie McNamara was injured as the goal was conceded and had to make way for forward Finnigan, forcing manager Eddie May to reshuffle his side.

The home side should have doubled their lead when Kenny Deuchar sent Samuel into the right-hand channel, but when his cross perfectly picked out Liam Craig the midfielder somehow missed an open goal.

Davidson was then disappointed not to have got his header on target from Craig's curling cross.

Saints midfield general Jody Morris came close in the 26th minute with a shot on the drop that whistled past the top corner of Olejnik's goal.

Falkirk came flying out of the traps following the break and finally found the incisiveness to grab the equaliser after only three minutes.

Marc Twaddle's ball forward was flicked on brilliantly by Kjartan Finnbogason for strike partner Finnigan to rattle a volley past the exposed Graeme Smith from 16 yards.

The visitors enjoyed a brief period of dominance after the goal, but half-time substitute Millar fired Saints back in front on 64 minutes.

An untidy attack climaxed with the ball falling for Millar on the right side of the area and his shot across Olejnik beat the keeper's despairing dive.

And, within two minutes, the Perth side effectively sealed the win with a third goal that was all down to Olejnik's error.

Craig sent in a deep free-kick from the right and, when the keeper came and failed to gather, Davidson headed in the ricochet from close range.

Saints' quick-fire double knocked the stuffing out of the Bairns and it was the home side who finished the game on top and seeking a fourth goal.

St Johnstone manager Derek McInnes:
"We deserved it on chances created.

"Falkirk passed and moved well and made us nervous and edgy at times but we realise we won't get our own way for 90 minutes.

"We missed three or four clear chances to finish the game in the first half and I thought it might have been one of those afternoons.

"But the players showed a lot of qualities to win. It wasn't always good but it was always determined."

Falkirk director of football Alex Smith:
"For some reason we got off to a bad start and we didn't recover until maybe the 35th minute.

"We got back in the game and should have taken confidence from the goal because it was an inspirational finish.

"But we got casual again and we were caught out.

"There's a way to win football matches and we have to learn how to do that very quickly."
