Win at Newcastle will boost Everton - Phil Jagielka

Everton defender Phil Jagielka hopes Saturday's 2-1 win at Newcastle will improve the squad's confidence in the wake of their FA Cup exit to Reading.

Just four days on from their shock 1-0 defeat by Reading at Goodison Park, Jagielka's winner fired the Blues up to 10th place in the Premier League.

"It's something to build on," he told BBC Radio Merseyside. "We need to keep getting points and see where it leads.

"If you take the Reading result out, that's two league wins on the trot."

After the disappointment of that FA Cup loss to Reading, Jagielka believes Saturday's victory on Tyneside proved a few doubters wrong - and put a smile on manager David Moyes' face.

"He is a lot happier," said Jagielka. "He's got faith in us as players and he'll be proud that the XI and the subs did what he wanted them to.

"He's smiling like a Cheshire cat. We don't do anything on purpose. It's not like no-one tried on Tuesday. It was just one of those days."

After successive league wins over Sunderland and Newcastle, Everton now have the chance to leapfrog both in the table.

Victory against Birmingham City at Goodison on Wednesday night would lift Moyes' men to eighth in the Premier League - within three points of sixth-placed Liverpool.
