Scots are safe hands - Gallacher

Paul Gallacher
Gallacher had spells in England with Norwich, Sheffield Wednesday and Gillingham

Dunfermline goalkeeper Paul Gallacher believes Scots goalkeeping is thriving both north and south of the Border.

Speaking to BBC Scotland, the former Sheffield Wednesday player also said that Scottish goalkeepers are gaining a reputation for excellence in England.

"Look at Craig Gordon in the Premiership and Allan McGregor doing well for Rangers," said Gallacher.

"Goalkeeping is coming along nicely, and we have two fantastic keepers vying for the number one spot with Scotland."

Gallacher, 29, started his career in Scotland with Dundee United, but spent most of his time in England with Norwich and on-loan at Gillingham, before a spell at Hillsborough eventually saw him move back north to East End Park last year

He said the standards in Scotland had improved from the late 1970s and 80s when Scottish keepers were viewed with derision in England, and that Scottish keepers are now seen as a valuable asset in Europe's top leagues.

"You see some of the money they're going for - nine million for Gordon - and McGregor is quoted at six, so it's looking great," said Gallacher.

"The state of Scottish keeping is thriving, and it's fantastic."
