United boss Peter Houston hailed his side after they thumped Hibs at Easter Road to tighten their grip on third place in the Scottish Premier League.

"I'm very proud of them again as Hibs are a good, attacking side," Houston told BBC Scotland after the 4-2 win.

"We were clinical when we got into the final third and the spirit among the players is fantastic.

"I said that it was going to be an open game because Hibs just don't know how to defend and they attack teams."

United fell behind to Patrick Cregg's deflected strike in the first minute before hitting back through Jon Daly, Danny Swanson, David Goodwillie and Francisco Sandaza.

Anthony Stokes grabbed a late consolation for Hibs but United ran out deserved winners.

United's victory saw them stretch their lead over fourth-placed Hibs to five points but Houston is taking nothing for granted.

"Hibs can still catch us; we'll stay cool, calm and collected," he said.

"We've got a five-day break now up until Monday, then we'll try to go and beat St Johnstone.

"And we're looking forward to that game, against a team who are in great form. Every game is difficult."

Houston said he was delighted with how his midfielders were performing towards the close of the season.

"They all work like Trojans and are very forward-thinking players," he said. "Conway and Swanson are like winger types, but the other two in the middle are like dogs and they win the ball back for us.

"In saying that, Conway and Swanson go and do the dirty work as well; the catalyst of us winning matches is those four performing."
