Dundee United winger Craig Conway says the players want interim manager Peter Houston to succeed Craig Levein as the club's permanent manager.

Conway told BBC Scotland the dressing-room was united behind Houston, who has led the Tannadice club to victory in their last three matches.

However, Houston has said he does not want the job on a permanent basis.

"It was Peter who said he didn't want the job, not the players who said we don't want him," said Conway.

"If he wanted to take the job, he would have the full backing of all the players. We all get on really well with him."

Houston's time as caretaker started badly, with a 7-1 drubbing at the hands of champions Rangers.

"It's chalk and cheese to the way things were maybe three or four weeks ago," said Conway.

"After the Rangers game, everyone's heads were down and we were thinking we were in a bit of a rut.

"But we've picked ourselves up and we're back into third place."

Meanwhile, Houston says United can qualify for Europe this season after narrowly missing out for the past two seasons.

"We're in the position just now with 18 or 19 games left, it's up to us to maintain that to try to get into Europe, which the club deserves," he said.

The interim manager also said that, while he wasn't actively looking for new faces, he didn't want to lose anyone from his squad - particularly in defence.

"I'm really happy with the squad we've got. We've got a great bench, probably as good as anything in the SPL.

"Obviously, if anyone offers good money then a player will go. Money dictates that.

"But we've only got three centre-backs, the rest are just young boys.

"If we were to lose a centre-back, it creates a problem for us, especially as we're trying to push to get into Europe.

"Hopefully, in the summer, we'll take a look at that department and try to improve it."
