Nicky Weaver will aim to put himself in the shop window at Tannadice
Dundee United have signed former Manchester City goalkeeper Nicky Weaver on a short-term deal.
The 30-year-old will remain at Tannadice until January in the hope of regular first-team football before joining another club in England.
Weaver became a free agent at the end of last season following Charlton's relegation to League One.
United manager Craig Levein said Weaver had invaluable experience from his time in the English Premier League.
Levein was looking to add a goalkeeper to his squad after Lukasz Zaluska joined Celtic and Zilina demanded a fee to allow pre-contract signing Dusan Pernis to move to Tannadice before January.
Veteran former Hearts goalkeeper Steve Banks, who is United's new goalkeeping coach, was the man in possession of the jersey during the pre-season trip to Ireland.
"Nicky has an impressive pedigree, and this move is beneficial both to him and to Dundee United," Levein told the club website.
"The short term nature of the deal gives me the experienced cover I need until Dusan Pernis joins us in January and allows him to put himself in the shop window for a move back to England, where I'm sure he could still play at Premier League level."
Weaver joined Man City from first club Mansfield in 1997 and spent 10 years with the English Premier League outfit.
He spent a loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday in the 2005/06 season before leaving City the following year. Weaver enjoyed two years with Charlton Athletic until their relegation last season.
