Doncaster Rovers have failed in a bid to sign veteran striker Dean Windass from Premier League side Hull City.
Rovers, who have scored seven goals in the Championship this season, have made enquiries to a number of top-flight clubs as they search for a striker.
"We had conversations with Phil Brown this week about the availability of Dean Windass," Rovers boss Sean O'Driscoll told BBC Radio Sheffield.
"He'd like to stay at Hull so that was another avenue opened and closed."
Windass, 39, scored 15 goals as City won promotion last season but has only started one game this season.
He had recently been linked with a move to League One outfit Leeds.
