Midfielder Richie Wellens has signed a new three-year contract with Championship side Doncaster Rovers.

The 28-year-old was instrumental in Rovers' promotion via the play-offs last term, scoring 11 goals in his first season in South Yorkshire.

Assistant manager Richard O'Kelly told BBC Radio Sheffield: "For all the things he brings to the side we are delighted he has signed another deal.

"When we got him last year he was another part of the jigsaw."

He added: "He was a player that has played at a higher level, technically very good and has played in the Championship before."

Wellens signed for Rovers from Oldham Athletic on a free transfer last summer and has been a source of interest to other clubs during pre-season.

"It's a club that is going places and I was more than happy to sign on to my current deal," said Wellens.

"The way we play football is one of the main reasons that I wanted to stay. The manager is great in getting us to play the way that he wants to play."
