Former Scotland international Steven Pressley has failed to win a contract with Championship side Doncaster.
The 34-year-old defender had been on trial at Rovers but only appeared in one of the club's pre-season games.
Rovers manager Sean O'Driscoll told the Doncaster Free Press: "We are looking for someone younger and quicker.
"Steve needs to work on his fitness but he is a player with a tremendous attitude and we agreed to keep in touch if the situation changes."
Pressley was released by Celtic at the end of last season and is without a club, he is currently joint-assistant manager for the national side.
He is one of only a few players to have played for both Rangers and Celtic, before joining Gordon Strachan's side he made 271 appearances for Hearts and scored a penalty for them in the 2006 Scottish Cup Final.
