Newell led Luton to the League One title in 2005 |
Derby County have confirmed that Luton boss Mike Newell was interviewed for their managerial vacancy - but insist that he was not offered the job. Newell had told the Luton News: "If I wanted to be Derby manager, I would have been Derby manager by now."
But Rams managing director Mike Horton said: "We have, with the full knowledge of Luton, conducted interviews with Mike, as we have with other candidates.
"No offer was made and none declined," he told the Evening Telegraph.
"At the time, we were in no position to offer him the manager's role when the process was only part way through."
The Rams' other targets have included Preston manager Billy Davies - but North End have refused him permission to speak to the East Midlands club.
