Players deserve better - Penney

Dave Penney
Penney has praised his players for their attitude to the club's problems

Darlington boss Dave Penney has blasted the club's administrators after they refused to sanction an overnight stay before Saturday's 1-0 win at Barnet.

Penney spoke to BBC Tees after the game, but only gave a brief statement before departing for the dressing rooms without answering any questions.

"The players have been excellent since administration," he said.

"The players are being treated like amateurs at the moment at the football club and deserve better."

Assistant manager Martin Gray did come out to speak to the waiting media, and explained Penney's anger.

"I think he's frustrated, and I understand why," he said.

"We prepare right all season, we get to the most important stage and things have gone badly, we prepared to come down on Thursday but then we were told we weren't able to do so.

"It's very frustrating because we set our standards very high."

Gray was full of praise for the players, particularly Danny Carlton, who lined up in an unfamiliar role on the right of midfield.

"Danny's been different class, he's chipped in with goals and he's since he's come in he's had a massive help to the football club," he added.

"He's the exact type of person, character and player we want at the football club at this time."
