Davis made 145 appearances for Crewe between 1983 and 1987.

Crewe assistant boss Steve Davis was delighted his team beat Port Vale to continue their impressive run and close in on the top three in League Two.

The Alex won for the fourth time in January by beating Vale 2-1.

Davis told BBC Radio Stoke: "I said before the game this would be an important result for us if we got one, and in the end we are all delighted."

Crewe are three points off an automatic promotion place in League Two after four wins in their last five games.

"The players couldn't have given any more. They performed well and they showed they wanted it as much as the staff and everyone else at the club," added Davis.

"It showed what it meant to us all when the final whistle went. The joy and elation came through in the dressing room."
