David Artell surprised by Crewe Alexandra fans' booing

Crewe Alexandra defender David Artell has expressed his shock at the reaction of some supporters to their disappointing start to the season.

Crewe lost both of their opening League Two fixtures, including a 1-0 home defeat by Hereford on the opening day.

"To be honest I couldn't believe it. After the Hereford game we got booed off," he told BBC Radio Stoke.

"It was one game in and I thought we'd played quite well but I suppose results are everything."

Artell, signed from Morecambe in the summer, was captain for the defeat and compared the reaction unfavourably to the mood of fans at his former club.

"Coming from a crowd at Morecambe who were behind you 100% per cent of the time and not getting ahead of themselves because they're in the highest league position they've ever been in, it was a shock to the system," he said.

"I'd rather they show their frustration after the final whistle than during the game though."

The 29-year-old admitted that the pressure was on his team, but also suggested that there were reasons to be optimistic despite the defeats.

"The pressure is always on but we're not getting too despondent because we're not far off," he said.

"Last season people tried to outmuscle Crewe but that hasn't been the case in both games. We've just come up a bit short in our own play rather than other teams coming and bullying us, which I see as a big positive.

"It's only a matter of time before our football then does start to come to fruition and we do get the results our football deserves."
