Steve Davis wants to learn as much as he can under Gudjon Thordarson
New Crewe Alexandra assistant manager Steve Davis says he wants to be a Football League boss in the future.
The much-travelled, 43-year-old former Crewe, Burnley and Barnsley stopper has returned to the club where he started his professional career back in 1983.
Following three years of success as Nantwich Town boss, he now links up with Gudjon Thordarson at Gresty Road.
"It's a chance to learn the ropes under Gudjon," Davis told BBC Stoke. "I am ambitious but that's for another day."
Davis admits that the first priority is getting the club back on course after the shock and pain of last season's relegation - especially after the initial impact of Thordarson's arrival when he seemed sure to save the Alex from the drop.
"We need to change the fortunes of the club," added Davis. "I hope that the partnership between myself and Gudjon will pay off. I'll give him a new dimension and the opportunity for a fresh opinion.
"I am an ambitious person, but my priority is to work with Gudjon and be his support mechanism.
"I want to work up to being a manager, to the highest point I can. I did that as a player and hopefully I can do the same as a manager."
Birmingham-born Davis guided Nantwich Town to FA Vase glory in 2006, following that up with two successive promotions in the next two years.
Now, a few rungs higher, he hopes to have the same positive impact.
"I really believe that I can be a success here," he said. "It will take a lot of hard work and commitment - I got nothing at Nantwich without that."
