Crewe chairman John Bowler has said Gudjon Thordarson's experience was a key factor in appointing the Icelander as the Alex's new manager.
Thordarson takes charge of the Railwaymen on Tuesday, replacing Steve Holland who was removed in November.
Bowler told BBC Radio Stoke: "We felt that he had all the attributes we were looking for.
"He has been successful both in England and in Iceland and is both experienced and enthusiastic."
Bowler also confirmed that technical director Dario Gradi played a big role in the appointment of the new manager.

"I asked Dario if he could work with Gudjon and Dario confirmed that he can," said Bowler.
"I'm sure he will bring new ideas to go with commitment and a desire to do the job.
"He's also a man who knows his own mind who will tell you what he thinks rather than what you want to hear."
