Crewe Alexandra's new manager will be one of Gudjon Thordarson or John Ward, reports BBC Radio Stoke.
It is understood that both men have been interviewed for the job and that the Crewe board will now meet to appoint the new boss.
Ward was sacked by Carlisle in November while Thordarson has managed Stoke, Notts County and Barnsley.
Former Spurs midfielder Mark Robson was also in contention for the job, but is now thought to be out of the running.
Dario Gradi is currently in caretaker charge at the Alexandra Stadium, following the removal of Steve Holland.
Crewe currently lie bottom of League One, having picked up just 12 points from their opening 20 games.
