Alex have bid for player accepted

Crewe begin their season at home to Brighton on Saturday

Crewe Alexandra have had a bid for an unnamed player accepted, reports BBC Radio Stoke.

Crewe are looking for a striker to replace Nicky Maynard after his move to Bristol City last week and are thought to be chasing Hibs' Clayton Donaldson.

"We need to arrange a meeting with the player, talk terms, do a medical and all the rest of it," said first-team coach Steve Holland.

"That might take a couple of days or it might take longer than that."

Meanwhile trialist Eddie Johnson has been released after Holland decided not to offer him a deal at the Alexandra Stadium.

"We compared him to the forwards that we have already and the one we're trying to sign," said Holland.

"Given where we thought he would stand in the pecking order we felt it was best if he moved on."
