Kuipers made 288 appearances in his 10-year spell at Brighton

Crawley Town goalkeeper Michel Kuipers says competition for the number one jersey with Scott Shearer will help their League Two promotion push.

The 37-year-old made his comeback from injury in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy defeat by Southend in midweek.

Kuipers told BBC Sussex and BBC Surrey: "I think it is important for the club that every position is covered by at least two players.

"We all need to raise the bar to finish in the top three."

Kuipers, who won promotion from the fourth tier with Brighton & Hove Albion 10 years ago, believes the Reds must have a strong core if they are to challenge this season.

"A solid base at the back and a strong spine down the middle is the recipe for achieving promotion," the Dutchman added.

"Also, it's important we focus on our commitment and work-rate."

The Reds welcome Bristol Rovers to the Broadfield Stadium on Saturday.
