Coventry City defender Ben Turner has signed a new contract committing him to the club until the end of next season.

The 20-year-old Birmingham-born player told BBC Coventry and Warwickshire that the 18-month deal would be a boost to his confidence.

"I've had my eye on getting myself sorted with a longer deal with the club and I'm delighted to have got there," said Turner.

"It's a big relief but I've always believed in myself."

Turner broke into the first team as a teenager under Iain Dowie last season, making 19 starts before a hamstring injury forced him on to the sidelines.

He had to wait until the beginning of December for his first league appearance under Chris Coleman but has now played in nine consecutive matches since.

"It's taken a lot of patience to wait to get my chance in the team," admitted Turner. "I'm just glad that I seem to have done enough in my games this season to earn a new contract.

"It gives me great confidence to know that I've done well for two managers at the club.

"I feel that it wasn't a fluke that I was playing under Dowie and hopefully I'm proving it."

Turner even promised better to come. "Hopefully I can still play better than I am and keep pushing on, trying to improve," he said. "I'm young but I'm also hungry, and I'm willing to listen and learn.

"Hopefully in the next few years, I can keep improving and keep putting in solid performances. If I can do that, I'll be very happy."
