Coventry City striker Robbie Simpson admitted he was upset not to start the 2-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday.
Simpson was dropped to the bench against the Owls but came on to score the clinching goal and secure the Sky Blues' first home win for three months.
The 23-year-old told BBC Coventry and Warwickshire: "I was disappointed about being dropped but I understand the manager's decision.
"I was delighted to get the goal to put the game out of reach."
Meanwhile, Coventry boss Chris Coleman could not hide his joy after seeing his side end the year with a victory.
He said: "I am delighted to score two goals and get a great three points."
Coleman's side welcome non-league outfit Kidderminster Harriers to the Ricoh Arena on Saturday in the third round of the FA Cup.
