Chester manager Mark Wright says he would like to stay with the side despite their impending relegation from the Football League.
City will go down on Saturday even if they beat Darlington, unless they can achieve a 19 swing on goal difference.
"If the chairman wants me to stay then I'll put a team together that I know will compete in the Conference," Wright told BBC Radio Merseyside.
"We've got out of there once before - it's going to be difficult."
Wright added: "But at the end of the day, it's not impossible. Now we have to approach it in the right manner and go and find the players.
"It can be achieved."
The former England and Liverpool defender says the club must look forward and want to be successful if he is to remain at the Deva Stadium.
"I want to stay in football and I want to do it," continued Wright.
"The chairman has been good to me and we're good friends and if he turns around and says to me we're building and he wants me to stay then I'll stay.
"I know if had we would have been allowed to bring in the players that we wanted, we would not be in this position.

"We can put a team together. I'd like to be able to put a team together, but that's not down to me.
"I came to try and help the club out. We did the best we could and in a lot of games we played ever so well."
