Shelvey signs Charlton contract

Jonjo Shelvey
Shelvey has ended speculation by signing a professional deal

Charlton's youngest ever player Jonjo Shelvey has marked his 17th birthday by signing his first professional deal with the Addicks.

The highly rated midfielder is a product of the club's academy and made his debut against Barnsley last season at the age of 16 years and 59 days.

Charlton manager Phil Parkinson told the club's website: "We're very, very pleased. He's an excellent prospect.

"I haven't seen a better 17-year-old in the country."

Romford-born Shelvey, who has signed a two-and-a-half-year deal, said: "I'm on top of the world. It's everything I've dreamed about since I was a little kid and now it has all come true.

"It's the best birthday present I could wish for - I failed my theory driving test this morning, so this wasn't a bad way to cheer me up."

Shelvey has played for Charlton at Under-16, Under-18 and reserve levels as well as skippering the England Under-16 side to success in the Victory Shield.

"I just want to go out there, do what I do and play football. Hopefully that will be enough. We want to stay up. That's what we're planning to do and I think that's what we will do," he said.
