Fleetwood aims for Wales call-up

Fleetwood will test himself at a higher level next season

Charlton Athletic's newest recruit Stuart Fleetwood hopes his move to the Championship will kick-start his Wales international career.

The 22-year-old striker, who moved to Charlton from Forest Green, has yet to play for the senior Wales team, despite representing the Under-21s.

Fleetwood told BBC London 94.9: "Having a big club next to your name does help a little bit.

"But it'll just be an added bonus if I do get back into the Welsh set-up."

Fleetwood feels his 36-goal haul last season was not recognised by his country because he was playing in the Blue Square Premier.

He added: "I did quite well last season, but having a lower league side next to your name doesn't ring any bells."

Fleetwood also thinks the Addicks' style of play will help him to make the step up to the Championship next season, and says that conditions might suit him better.

"Obviously the pitches in the Conference are not as good as the Championship," he added.

"So it was difficult at times. After Christmas when the weather got bad we started to struggle a bit.

"It was important for me to go to a club that do play football. I'm not the tallest but I've got a bit of pace and hopefully playing [this style of] football will definitely suit me."
