Young joined Charlton from Tottenham for �3m in 2001

Although the 26-year-old right-back is not out of contract, the club are keen to secure his future at The Valley.

Charlton chairman Richard Murray told the club's website: "Luke is a key member of our squad and we have offered him a lucrative new deal."

England international Young was named on the stand-by list for this summer's World Cup squad but was forced to withdraw because of an ankle injury.

Murray added: "He is an England international and his performances over the past few seasons, including last term when he was the club captain, have been excellent."

Young made his senior international debut against the United States in 2005 and has gone on to win seven caps.

Charlton have already released Francis Jeffers, Shaun Bartlett, Jonatan Johansson, Jay Bothroyd and Chris Perry this summer.

However, Jonathan Fortune and goalkeepers Darren Randolph and Rob Elliot have extended their contracts with the club.
