Mowbray aiming for Arsenal upset

Tony Mowbray
Mowbray believes he has players that can cause Arsenal problems

Manager Tony Mowbray insists Celtic are capable of upsetting Arsenal when the sides meet on Champions League qualifying duty in two weeks' time.

Celtic lost 2-1 in their final pre-season friendly against Manchester City, but Mowbray remains confident.

"I know we have players who can give them problems," said Mowbray. "We are good enough, we just have to take our chances when they come along."

"It is an exciting draw and a game we will go into believing we can win."

The first leg of the Champions League qualifier takes place at Celtic Park on 18 August, with the return leg at the Emirates eight days later.

The winners progress to the group stages of Europe's premier club tournament, with the loser dropping in to the inaugural group stages of Uefa's Europa League.

Arsenal are firm favourites to qualify, and Mowbray is under no illusions that the London side will be anything but difficult to overcome.

"The top four in the Premier League are on a different level to everyone else, as I found out last year with West Brom, and it is going to be a big ask for us," he added.

Celtic overcame Dinamo Moscow in the last qualifying round, having slipped to a 1-0 defeat at home in the first leg and Manchester City boss Mark Hughes was impressed by their 2-0 win in Russia.

It was a much-changed Celtic side that lost in Lancashire and Hughes reckons Mowbray's men could prove to be a tough challenge for Arsenal.

City's Gareth Barry opened the scoring in the 16th minute in Saturday's friendly, with Chris Killen netting an equaliser eight minutes later.

Former Celtic Park favourite Craig Bellamy found the winner for the hosts 10 minutes from the end.

"Celtic are a good, energetic team, and results such as that midweek will give them good confidence for the season ahead," said Hughes, who saw his side beaten 3-2 by Rangers last week.

"Arsenal are an accomplished side, with great technical ability - it's difficult to get the ball off them, so if Celtic can get the ball, they'll cause them problems.

"The two Old Firm sides are at a high level, with different styles and good individuals within both teams that will always cause you problems, because they have quality.

"I'm sure, as with most seasons in Scotland, they'll both be challenging for the title."
