Stephen Pearson has failed to become a regular starter |
Derby County manager Billy Davies has dismissed speculation that he wants to sign Celtic midfielder Stephen Pearson. Derby and Sunderland were both thought to have been chasing the 24-year-old after his agent revealed Celtic would put him up for transfer in January.
But Davies, whose 750,000 summer bid for Pearson was rejected, told BBC Sport: "As far as I'm concerned that situation was months ago.
"I was disappointed not to get the player but we've now moved on."
Pearson, who joined Celtic for 350,000 in 2004, has started only six games this season.
"We're delighted to have recently signed David Jones from Manchester United and I think he'll become an excellent player for Derby County," added Davies.
Agent Willie McKay told the Daily Record on Wednesday: "Gordon Strachan has reluctantly agreed to let Stephen go in January if the price is right.
"Gordon understands Stephen's situation and it was a great meeting.
"The Celtic manager knows Stephen is a great professional, who has always been popular within Parkhead and among the Celtic fans," added his agent.
"But Gordon can't guarantee him a game every week and, while he would like to keep him at the club, he recognises Stephen needs first-team football."
