Carlisle's on-loan striker Gareth Taylor believes that United can build on Tuesday's 2-1 win at relegation rivals Crewe Alexandra.
The 36-year-old, who has joined the Cumbrians on a one-month loan deal from Doncaster, scored just 17 minutes into his debut the Alexandra Stadium.
"It went well, I couldn't ask for more really," Taylor told BBC Radio Cumbria.
"It's no secret that we are not in a particularly decent position but that win gives us a bit of breathing space."
Taylor's first goal of the season was cancelled out by Clayton Donaldson's 34th-minute equaliser before a Joe Anyinsah's header gave Carlisle a vital three points.
The win lifts Greg Abbott's side up to 16th in League One, seven points above the relegation places.
"Obviously it's nice for me to bang in a goal in my first game but to get a result like that is superb," said Taylor.
"It was important not to lose the game. I think a draw probably wouldn't have been the worst thing in the world because they're also fighting for their lives."
Carlisle are the 14th club that Taylor has played for in a career that began as a trainee with Southampton.
Moves to Bristol Rovers, Crystal Palace, Sheffield United, Manchester City, Burnley, Nottingham Forest, Tranmere and Doncaster have amassed over 2m in transfer fees.
I see my future away from Doncaster, there's no doubt about that

The Weston-super-Mare-born forward has also had loan spells at Port Vale, QPR, Burnley and Crewe.
Taylor scored his only international goal for Wales in a 4-0 friendly victory over Scotland at the Millennium Stadium in 2004.
"I see my future away from Doncaster, there's no doubt about that," said Taylor.
"The club have been good to me there and allowed me to come away to Carlisle."
"I'll just see how it goes really. I made it known that I wanted to go out on loan, so far it has gone alright," he added.
And Taylor said he has seen enough from his new team to suggest that Carlisle will avoid dropping into League Two.
"You saw what [Carlisle] did last season and for one reason or another it's not gone so well this year," said Taylor.
"We've just got to make sure we see out this season as strongly as possible and hopefully we can achieve that."
