Carlisle United boss John Ward has reassured fans that retaining goalkeeper Kieren Westwood is one of his major ambitions this summer.

"I spoke to Kieren a few times and I'm watching his game for Ireland on Thursday," he told BBC Radio Cumbria.

"We are making an offer to Kieran but I don't want to take his focus off his international appearance.

"He knows about that, we will be chatting to him and it's something we're very keen to do obviously."

The former Cheltenham boss also confirmed that striker Joe Garner is making progress in his recovery from damaged anterior cruciate ligaments.

The 20-year-old picked up the injury during February's 1-0 win against Crewe and Ward admits the young striker remains in good spirits despite the setback.

"Joe Garner is fine but it is a slow process. He's talking a good chat that he'll be back alot quicker than nature will allow him to but he's moving on well," he said.

"Anything before Christmas-time would be an absolute bonus so let us keep that in perspective."
