The Welsh FA has rejected Cardiff's appeal following Stephen McPhail's sending off in the 1-0 win at Reading.
The Irish midfielder will serve a three-match ban, his red card for serious foul play for a high challenge on Royals midfielder Jem Karacan.
That rules him out of Saturday's visit of QPR, Wednesday's Carling Cup trip to Aston Villa and the following Saturday's game at Sheffield Wednesday.
"It's another poor decision by the FAW," said Cardiff manager Dave Jones.
"We've watched the video over and over, and the evidence shows that Stephen didn't touch the boy.
"We wouldn't have appealed if we didn't think we had proper grounds."
Referee Paul Taylor also sent off McPhail last season.
That was for two yellow cards in the south Wales derby draw with Swansea, one of two dismissals suffered by the midfielder in 2008/9.
