Kelvin Etuhu is at the Cardiff City Stadium on a season-long loan
Dave Jones hopes to persuade chairman Peter Ridsdale to release funds so he can bolster Cardiff City's attack after the injury blow to Kelvin Etuhu.
The 21-year-old will be out for up to eight weeks with ankle ligament damage after crashing into advertising boards in Sunday's 1-0 defeat to Newcastle.
Ross McCormack, their top-scorer last term, will not return from a hamstring injury until the end of the month.
Loan signing Etuhu will now return to Manchester City to be assessed further.
Jones now hopes to delve into the loan market for cover if gets authorisation from Ridsdale.
Jones told BBC Sport: "I'll sit down and have a chat with the chairman to see if I can force the issue. But everything is tight here at the moment."
Etuhu was signed by Cardiff last month on a season-long loan to strengthen their strike-force but this is the latest injury blow for the Manchester City youngster.
Jones said: "He has had a scan and he'll be out for six to eight weeks.
"He has gone back to Manchester City to see a surgeon who will decide whether something else needs to be done.
"The lads is distraught as he has had a long history of injuries but he has come through though that and we've got him up to match pace - then this happens.
"It's another blow for him so we will need to pick him up and make sure he goes again."
Scottish international McCormack, who scored 23 goals for the Championship high-fliers last season, has been out for a month since tearing a hamstring against Blackpool last month.
"He is nowhere near fit and should be back by the end of the month," said Jones.
Meanwhile, full-back Kevin McNaughton is set to be out for another three to four weeks with a ankle ligament damage.
