Klimpl had a loan period at Motherwell last season

Cardiff have released Maros Klimpl after the Slovakian international failed to impress in a one-week trial.

The 29-year-old was taken on the club's pre-season trip to Portugal and scored the only goal in Cardiff's 1-0 win over Fatima on Wednesday.

"Maros did OK and he scored at Fatima, but my job is to judge if he is better than players at the club," manager Dave Jones told the South Wales Echo.

"That's always the rule. I thank Maros for his efforts and wish him the best."

Klimpl is a free agent after being released from the last year of his contract by Danish club FC Midtjylland.

He had a loan period at Motherwell last season, where he was converted from a centre-back to a central midfielder.

Jones says he does not expect to have any other triallists at the club this summer.

Youngsters Josh Magennis, Adam Matthews and Arron Morris joined the senior squad for the trip to Portugal, but Darcy Blake missed out because of a groin strain.

The Bluebirds face a Presidents Select XI in Alcochete on Saturday.
