Cardiff defender Roger Johnson is hoping Sunday's crucial south Wales derby is refereed sensibly.

The two previous meetings between Cardiff and Swansea this season have been highly-charged, fiery encounters with three red cards brandished.

"Hopefully we will have a ref who can understand there's going to be tackles flying in, in a high tempo game with a lot at stake for both teams," he said.

Premier League referee Mike Dean will officiate the match at Ninian Park.

Johnson, 25, who snubbed Swansea for the Bluebirds almost three years ago, is desperate to get back on to the pitch.

His last outing came before the international break in a 3-0 defeat at home to Sheffield United in which Cardiff had two players sent off.

Striker Ross McCormack had his red card rescinded but Johnson's centre-back partner Gabor Gyepes is suspended for the visit of Swansea.

And Johnson admits the gap between the two games has been tough.

"It was a disappointing end and a hard one to take because we have had to deal with it for two weeks." he said.

"We probably needed a Tuesday game to put it right straight away and personally I find it hard to deal with for that period of time.

"We are looking forward to it and we need to get back on track."

Cardiff occupy the last play-off spot in the Championship and have up to two games in hand over their play-off rivals.

The Bluebirds are also five points ahead of Swansea and could effectively end their arch-rivals' promotion hopes with victory.

They have yet to do that in two attempts this season, losing 1-0 in the Carling Cup and drawing 2-2 in the reverse league fixture, both played at Swansea's Liberty Stadium.

"We will look to do a job for ourselves and the fans," added Johnson.

"Come Sunday, there's a month left and we've got seven or eight games in April.

"If we get five wins out of them, we would probably be guaranteed the play-offs.

"But if we can push for six wins and a couple of draws, there's no reason why we can't get second spot."
