Cambridge have been in non-league football for three years

Cambridge United director George Rolls believes manager Gary Brabin will prove his doubters wrong.

Brabin kicked off his reign as U's boss with a 1-0 win at Northwich, a match watched by previous boss Jimmy Quinn.

Rolls told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "You've only got to look around the club since he was appointed, everyone will tell you how hard he works.

"It's nice that we've got a manager who wants to be there full-time at the football club."

Last season Quinn took the club to the play-offs after a successful Blue Square Premier campaign, but eventually saw his side slip to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Exeter in the final.

Compared with Quinn, Brabin has relatively little managerial experience having only previously been with Southport in the Blue Square North.

Nevertheless the former Chester and Hull man is keen to succeed at the Abbey and has set about signing a number of new players.

Jon Challinor, Andy Parkinson, Felino Jardim, Anthony Tonkin, and Phil Bolland all made their debuts at Northwich on Saturday.

Rolls hinted their could be further new arrivals before the transfer window closes at the end of August.

"I think there could be another couple of signings coming in.

"It's no secret we need a back-up keeper and it wouldn't surprise me if we look at another centre-half as well."

Cambridge were close to agreeing a deal for Woking defender Tommy Hutchinson last week, but that appears to have fallen through.

The U's host Kidderminster in their first home match of the season on Tuesday evening.
