Boylan 'surprised' by Quinn exit

Stevenage's former Cambridge United player Lee Boylan says he was surprised to learn about the end of Jimmy Quinn's reign as U's boss.

Over the weekend it was revealed that Quinn had agreed to leave United by mutual consent.

Boylan told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "Obviously Jimmy was the manager there and I couldn't see him going.

"A few of players asked him last year whether he'd be staying at the club and he said he was going to stay there."

Quinn lead the club to a second place finish in the Blue Square Premier last season, but since defeat to Exeter in the play-off final 11 players have left the club, along with a number of backroom staff and now the manager himself.

Boylan said: "There's obviously something that the board weren't happy with, but managers come and go in football."

Despite leaving for Stevenage earlier in the month, Boylan has been keeping in touch with his former team-mates.

"They're disappointed that Jimmy's gone, but they want to see who comes in and go from there," he added.

"A lot of players have left Cambridge now and there doesn't seem to be a lot of players going to Cambridge," he said.

"It's a hard one for the fans to swallow because obviously they don't want to see players go and they don't want to see the management staff go."
