After a club record 654 appearances for his only team to date, it is no real surprise that Darren Stride became affectionately known as "Mr Burton Albion".
Stride made his debut for the Brewers in an FA Cup tie in 1993 and went on to captain the team to promotions to the Conference and the Football League.
Even though time has been called on his Burton career he says he his not bitter about the decision.
The 34-year-old defender told BBC Radio Derby: "The 17 years have flown by and I have enjoyed every minute of it.
"Obviously it hurts when you first hear about it but it's sunk it now and I can look back at 17 years of great memories."
One of his highlights was twice lining up against Manchester United in the third round of the FA Cup in 2006.
The Brewers held United to a goalless draw at the Pirelli Stadium and he recalls the moment when Sir Alex Ferguson decided to bring on two of his 'big-guns'.
"I looked across and saw Rooney and Ronaldo about to come on and thought, now what do we do?" he explained.
Stride also enjoyed a close relationship with Nigel Clough during his ten years as Brewers manager. "You didn't need to be told who was in charge because there was an aura around Clough the moment he walked through the door," he said.
"I'm certain that he will be successful at Derby County."
Stride also proved to be something of a utility player for the Brewers having played in every position except left-back.
"Twice I ended up in goals after the keeper had been sent off and I once saved a penalty," he said.
"Perhaps I should consider a permanent switch to goalkeeper as it seems to have worked for Kevin Poole."
Veteran keeper Poole made seven appearances for Burton last season 2009/10 at the age of 46.
Now, as he faces up to life without Burton Albion - after playing for them in the Southern and Northern Leagues, the Conference and the Football League - Stride admits to being somewhat apprehensive.
"This isn't a position I've been in before," he said. "But I just need to remind managers that I am only 34 and there's plenty of football left in me yet."
