Lambert expects to be marked man

Rickie Lambert
Lambert has scored 50 league goals in three years at Rovers

Bristol Rovers striker Rickie Lambert says he is fully prepared for teams to single him out for special attention this season.

The 27-year-old finished as League One's joint top scorer last season, along with Simon Cox, with 29 goals.

"I got a bit of extra attention at the end of last season but I'm not really worried about it as long as we're winning," he told BBC Radio Bristol.

"If I'm playing well the goals will come and I'll put the hard work in."

Lambert's goal haul was the best of his career so far, but the Liverpudlian says there is still room for improvement in his game.

He said if he was here he'd be fine and would give us his all because he loves it here

Boss Paul Trollope on Rickie Lambert

"I'd like to be more consistent. I was lucky that last season even if I played badly I was scoring, so I'd like to play as well as I can in every game," he said.

"I'm not feeling quite as sharp as the end of last season but I hope that'll come quickly."

Despite his form Bristol Rovers say there were no offers for their top-scorer during the summer.

First-team coach Paul Trollope said: "Like any player he's ambitious and we were realistic. But he said if he was here he'd be fine and would give us his all because he loves it here.

"He's been here three years and he's a main man for us on and off the pitch."
