Pirates keeper plots strong start

Steve Phillips
Phillips has made 165 appearances for Rovers since joining them in 2006

Goalkeeper Steve Phillips says Bristol Rovers must make a strong start if they want to make the play-offs this season.

Rovers won just one of their first nine league games last season.

"We need to get out the blocks a bit better because when you're 15 points behind at Christmas you've got no chance," he told BBC Radio Bristol.

"The top six is achievable but we'll have to play pretty well and consistently which we haven't done in the last few seasons."

Rovers are facing a third year back in League One, with the club promising to push on after finishing 11th last season.

Phillips added: "Everyone's expectation is a lot higher, and progression is the aim of the game. We need to be optimistic but realistic.

"There are some massive clubs in this league, and looking back at my career in my opinion this division will be as tough as it's ever been."

Rovers had no problem in front of goal last season netting 79 times in the league, and Phillips believes the return to fitness of defender Danny Coles will make them tighter defensively.

"He'll make a massive difference. Everyone saw what he was capable of in the few games he played last year," he said.
