Bristol Rovers have signed 23-year-old midfielder Jeff Hughes from Crystal Palace on a three-year contract.
The Northern Ireland international moved to the Memorial Stadium on loan last season, but suffered an injury without playing for the first team.
"We see him as a wide-left midfield player, but he can also play left back," director of football Lennie Lawrence told BBC Radio Bristol.
"That versatility is quite important to us," he added.
"We still think he's still got Championship potential and he's only 23 years old so he ticks all our boxes."
Rovers paid an undisclosed fee in excess of 100,000 for Hughes.
Lawrence also revealed the club are close to signing a new striker.
"We're very hopeful that'll be done before pre-season training starts. The one we really want will take a couple more weeks, it's not straight forward, but I'd be as delighted to land him as I am Jeff Hughes."
