Johnson's City have picked up just seven points from their last 10 games
Bristol City manager Gary Johnson believes his side are well placed to mount a push for promotion next season.
A 1-0 defeat at Swansea put an end to their slim hopes of reaching the play-offs for a second successive season.
A disappointed Johnson told BBC Radio Bristol: "Games are won and lost in both penalty areas. We know we've got to improve in those areas and we will.
"We'll look at it - the chairman's very forward thinking, so am I, and eventually we'll get it spot on."
City broke into the play-off places in late February after a victory at Reading, but since then they have won just once in 10 games.
Johnson's ambitious agenda for next season is an effort to match the ambitions and commitment of his chairman, Steve Lansdowne, who spoke to the players and staff in the dressing room prior to the Swansea match.
"This group of lads have given their all. We are where we are and it's only our second year in the Championship," Johnson added.
"We'll get another chance next year to compete at this level, we are improving and the future looks bright for the football club.
"The chairman gave a great speech about where he wants to take the club and how ambitious he is.
"The money he's put into the club shows his commitment and we've got to make sure as a management team and players that we give him everything that we can in return."
