Bristol City's Christian Ribeiro has been ruled out for up to a year with Anterior Cruciate Ligament damage.
The Wales Under-21 international was stretchered off 26 minutes into his debut against Peterborough on Tuesday and taken to hospital for scans.
They revealed the damage and the 18-year-old will have an operation on Thursday.
City boss Gary Johnson said: "Everyone is gutted for Christian. It's hard luck on the lad."
"He added: "As I said on the night he will come back from this."
Ribeiro, who made his way through Bristol City's Academy, has three caps at U21 level.
