City captain expects tough start

Louis Carey
Louis Carey will captain Bristol City into the new season

Bristol City captain Louis Carey is warning his team-mates not to underestimate Blackpool on the opening day of the new season.

City will kick off the new campaign at Bloomfield Road on Saturday 9 August.

Carey told BBC Radio Bristol: "I think over the last four or five years it's always been an unbelievably tough place to go.

"They've always been a tough side to beat, especially at home at their place."

He added: "We had a good start to the season last year, and we've got to be looking to do the same again this year.

"If you want to get promoted, you need to beat sides you feel aren't going to be necessarily up at the top."

Bristol City reached the Championship play-off final last season before losing 1-0 to Hull City at Wembley Stadium.

We can't let losing to Hull affect how we start the new season

But Carey does not think the pain of missing out on the Premier League will have a negative impact on the new campaign.

"As soon as that final whistle has gone, there's nothing you can do about it, you can't dwell on it too long," said Carey.

"The gaffer will have us back pre-season, he'll have us all training hard with a smile on our face. We can't let that affect how we start to the new season."

Carey, who has now made over 500 appearances for the club, admits some players might cast a jealous eye on who Hull will be playing in the Premier League.

"The only one I know is that they've got Fulham at home on the opening day, but that's only because I saw it on text," he said.

"I haven't looked at their fixtures yet, but I'm sure myself and everybody will have a little look and will be thinking what could have been."
