Poyet sets out to win over fans

Newly installed Brighton manager Gus Poyet says winning over the fans is his first task.

Poyet's appointment is his first permanent managerial role after spells as an assistant at Swindon Town, Leeds United and Tottenham Hotspur.

"That's the first task," the Uruguayan told BBC Sussex. "You win the fans by winning games.

"I need to work hard, I need to prove that there is enough quality here to win games."

He added: "It doesn't matter how nice you are, how good a person you are in football, unfortunately.

"Especially for the fans it's about after the games. If you win you are great, if you don't it's a problem."

Sunday's trip to Southampton in League One will be Poyet's first game in charge and on his 42nd birthday.

An FA Cup replay at home to Wycombe Wanderers follows with games at home to Leeds United and Charlton either side of a trip to Norwich.

"I think they are tough games," he added. "We need to win points and get points on the table.

"Normally there has to be a reaction from the players, so I'm looking forward to the first game on Sunday.

"We know how difficult they are, teams that have been playing well in the last few weeks, it's going to be tough but it's 11 versus 11. I'm not worried at all, I'm just looking forward to the games."
