Butcher replaced Scott Fitzgerald as Brentford manager

His assistant Andy Scott has been named as caretaker manager and will take charge for the first time in Saturday's crucial League Two game at Wrexham.

Brentford have lost their last five league games and have not scored a goal for 520 minutes.

Chairman Greg Dyke said: "Terry could not have worked harder for this club and it is a great shame to see him go."

He added: "He's a decent, honest, likeable bloke and for men and women of my generation he is still a footballing hero. He goes with my very best wishes for the future."

Butcher said: "I would like to thank Brentford for giving me the opportunity to manage the club and I wish them every success in the future."

The former England captain was Brentford's third manager in 18 months following the departure of Martin Allen in May 2006.

Leroy Rosenior was appointed as Allen's successor but was sacked last November after the Bees failed to win for 16 matches.

Youth team boss Scott Fitzgerald replaced Rosenior but could not stop the club being relegated at the end of last season.

They have continued to struggle this term, despite making a reasonable start, and only won five out of 23 matches under Butcher.

Temporary boss Scott said: "I am desperately disappointed for Terry but I would ask everybody, both players and supporters alike, to focus on our next important match at Wrexham this coming Saturday."
