Bolton have agreed a fee with West Ham for centre-back Calum Davenport but manager Gary Megson says he may not complete the deal.
The 26-year-old has failed to cement a regular West Ham place this season.
"We've got an agreement with West Ham but we're also looking at other players in that position," said Megson.
"It still may happen that Calum joins Bolton but we will need another 24 hours before we decide what we are going to do."
Megson added: "We've also got another player that we're close to coming to an agreement with, so it's decision time.
"We may get accused of messing somebody about but we've got to do what's right for the football club."
Reports suggest that the other player is Zenit St Petersburg defender Sebastien Puygrenier, who the Trotters would be looking to sign on a loan deal.
