Jansen keen to keep options open

Matt Jansen
Jansen was wanted by three American clubs
Matt Jansen has returned to Bolton to train with their squad but is reluctant to commit to a new deal at any club.

The 28-year-old striker left Wanderers at the end of last season but is still a free agent after deciding against a move to Major League Soccer in America.

His father-in-law and representative Barry Corner told BBC Sport: "There have been lots of enquiries but he does not want a contract right now.

"He is keeping his options open - and Bolton are one of those options."

A catalogue of injuries has meant Jansen has started only 16 Premiership matches since his recovery from a 2002 motorcycle accident.

He joined Bolton on a short-term deal in January after being released by Blackburn.

Matt is not giving up - in fact it is quite the reverse

Matt Jansen's representative Barry Corner

The former Carlisle and Crystal Palace forward flew to the US in June for talks with the New York Red Bulls and two other MLS clubs.

It was reported he had failed to win a deal with New York after a spell on trial but Corner explained: "The fact is we just went over there to take a look.

"We had a look at a couple of other clubs in America as well, and all three were interested in offering him a contract.

"In fact they were so keen to offer him a deal they were squabbling among themselves about who was going to get him.

"They have a system over there where the first club you go and see is the official finder of the player. If they want him they can stop him signing for other clubs you then talk to - and that is what happened.

"In the end we just quietly withdrew and came home."

He has been linked with a return to his first club Carlisle but Corner said: "That is not an option at all.

"Matt is training with a Premiership club and that is where his intentions lie.

"If Bolton themselves were interested, then he would feel that he owes them a debt for helping him come back.

"Bolton are a possibility. He is training with the senior squad with Sam Allardyce's blessing which is nice but that is as far as it has gone.

"There have been no discussions with anyone else. We are basically not interested at the present time.

"He just wants time to train and play without the pressures that a contractual environment provides.

"He is pleased with the way things are at Bolton and they are happy with the set-up."

Corner says Jansen feels he still has a lot to offer despite his recent injury problems.

"Matt is not giving up - in fact it is quite the reverse," he explained.

"He has tried and tried over the course of the last three or four years and I think there has maybe been more expected from him than he has been able to give in the circumstances.

"That is the reason he is deliberately staying out of a contract - so he can progress at his own pace and in his own time.

"When he wants to play again it will be under his own terms and conditions."
