Niall Quinn signed Arnau during his short spell as Sunderland manager

Sunderland midfielder Arnau Riera has joined Blackpool for a week's training, with a view to completing a season-long loan move to Bloomfield Road.

The 26-year-old former Barcelona player joined the Premier League side in August 2006 but only managed two appearances during that time.

"Arnau is one of a number of triallists we are taking a look at," manager Simon Grayson told the club's website.

"We will take a look at each other and will take it from there."

Arnau, who is in the final year of his contract at the Stadium of Light, was sent off two minutes into his full debut against Bury in the League Cup.

He has since had loan spells with Southend and Falkirk.
