Steve Kean is to continue as Blackburn manager until the end of the season.
Kean, 43, took temporary charge of Rovers after the club's Indian owners sacked Sam Allardyce on 13 December.
"Venkys London Limited - Blackburn Rovers - has decided to continue with Mr Steve Kean as manager until the end of the season," said a club statement.
Kean, who was a first-team coach under Allardyce, oversaw Blackburn for a 1-1 draw at home to West Ham before being placed in control until June 2011.
Blackburn's owners had declared they were in no rush to appoint a successor to Allardyce but the latest move gives the club some stability ahead of the January transfer window.
It is unclear how much money Kean will have to spend but the decision to give him the job for the rest of the campaign should give the players at the club more clarity.
Central defender Ryan Nelsen has voiced his shock at Allardyce's departure, while there is speculation defender Christopher Samba may submit a transfer request over the actions taken by the owners.
Kean will have to deal with such issues after already being dealt a setback with 18-year-old defender Phil Jones suffering a knee injury in the game against the Hammers which rules him out for three or four months.
Rovers are currently 12th in the Premier League and Kean takes over with relatively little managerial experience.
The Scotsman was a coach at Reading and became Chris Coleman's assistant at Fulham, Real Sociedad and Coventry before being brought in at Rovers by Allardyce in August 2009.
