Birmingham City midfielder Alex Hleb has resumed training after four weeks out of action with a hamstring injury.

The 29-year-old, who is currently on a season-long loan from Barcelona, has not featured since 27 November.

"I don't think he had a full pre-season which is what you definitely need as a player," said manager Alex McLeish.

"Alex is playing catch-up in terms of fitness but we've been encouraged by the work he has put in this last week. He is training well."

The former Arsenal man had initially struggled for form at St. Andrew's but was showing encouraging signs until he suffered the injury during the 1-1 draw at Fulham, a game in which he set up the opening goal for Sebastian Larsson.

In all, Hleb has played 11 times for Birmingham, scoring his only goal in a Carling Cup victory over MK Dons.

Meanwhile, McLeish also reiterated his desire to strengthen his squad during the January transfer window.

USA striker Edson Buddle is still training with the club, with the possibility of joining during the off-season in the MLS.

McLeish added: "We are looking to add some quality and the board and myself are looking at it together.

"We know January can be difficult with inflated prices but there are a few names out there we are looking at.

"I think anyone we bring in has to be proven, people who know their way about the English game."
