Hendon wants 'fortress' Underhill

New Barnet manager Ian Hendon insists he is absolutely determined to make his side difficult to beat at home again.

"Towards the end of last season we made Underhill a fortress," he told BBC London 94.9 on Tuesday.

"We've got to get back to that as soon as possible because it's difficult to win away games in this league."

Former Barnet assistant manager Hendon took over the main role after Paul Fairclough stepped down on Sunday after five years in the job.

It had been announced that Hendon has been put in temporary control of the club but Hendon said the job is his to lose.

We've won one game at home all season and we've got to turn that around, we've got to start getting wins at home and getting three points on the board

"Basically I've been put in charge, I'm the manager of the football club and if things go well that will be the way it will remain," he said.

"We're going to take one game at a time, organise ourselves, and just look at getting a win on Saturday."

Barnet are 21st in the League Two table with 19 points and host Grimsby, who are one place below them with 14 points, on Saturday.

"We've won one game at home all season and we've got to turn that around, we've got to start getting wins at home and getting three points on the board," he said.

Since Fairclough announced he was stepping down from the job it has been revealed he will continue working with the club as a director.

He will also take up a new role with Barnet Sports Development, a new complex due to be finished in the summer.

Hendon took over following the 2-0 win away at Bournemouth after which he paid tribute to Fairclough.

"I'm sure he's scratching his head as to why the lads can perform like they did on Sunday and yet in the last 10-15 games they haven't," he said.

"He will not be there at the training ground involved in the football side of things at first team level; but he has said to me he is there if I need to ask him anything or need advice and I'm very grateful for that."
