Barry has two years left on his Villa contract |
Aston Villa captain Gareth Barry has signed a new four-year contract with the Midlands club. Earlier this summer Villa rejected a 4.5m bid from Portsmouth for Barry, 25, who said Martin O'Neill's arrival had been key to his decision to stay.
Barry said: "There has been a lot of speculation about my future, but I'm glad to get something sorted and I'm looking forward to the next four years.
"Martin O'Neill's arrival has played a big part in this decision."
Barry added: "It is vitally important that this club got the right man, not just for myself but for the club as a whole.
"I definitely feel my best years are yet to come.
"If you look at players in recent years, you see them playing their best football between the ages of 25 and 30."
Former England Under-21 captain Barry has made more than 300 first team appearances in the past eight years for Villa.
